On the Road

We always make an event out of our travels, even if it slows up our journey. Or maybe because it slows up our journey.

The Smokies

We decided to drive to Florida at a leisurely pace. We left October 6 and traveled in the rain to a stop in central Kentucky. Next day we made our way to a cabin in the mountains in Townsend, Tennessee, on the western edge of the Smokies.

From the porch we could see sunsets

Full Moon Rising

and sunrises.

Morning from the Porch

We spent a day driving the loop road to Cades Cove, but the traffic was heavy and the stops crowded with tourists – people like us, but not so special.

 Old Car City

Then to Old Car City, an hour north of Atlanta, for two days of shooting with Denise Ippolito.

The site features over 4,000 cars spread out over 34 acres, most of them rusting away picturesquely in the trees that have grown up in the 80+ years of its existence. These shots will give you a taste of what the place looks like.

There's a story behind this one, but we don't know what it is.

The only downside is that we had to process so many pictures.

Southeast Railroad Museum

After three nights in a splendid Hilton Gardens Inn Cartersville, we drove to the Southeast Railroad Museum an hour away just west of Atlanta. We faced some very difficult lighting issues, and much of the shooting was in very cramped quarters, but we persisted.

One of the highlights was the car used by the Army for troop transport. It featured an elaborate kitchen.

Next adventure: Seeing our grandson Ben at his new digs as a grad student at Emory. We added in a birthday surprise for Kim: Genne’ joined us for two wonderful meals and a lot of catching up.

We had planned to drive to Gainesville the next day, but we opted instead for a leisurely brunch and a quick drive through the Emory campus, and then we drove through heavy rain to Mason, which allowed us to make it home by early afternoon on the 15th.
